Poinsettias With a Purpose

by LIZ ONUFER

This holiday season, Poinsettias With a Purpose will be raising money for the new non-opioid inpatient pain treatment program at Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego. The Rancho Bernardo Unit of the Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary hosts the annual fundraising sale of florist-quality poinsettias. “This is a wonderful opportunity to give back using the same funds that you are planning to spend for holiday decor or gifts. The quality of the plants is amazing, which makes it a win-win, especially for the kids,” said Marcie Sands, RB Unit’s publicity chairwoman.

The cutting-edge pain management program is the first of its kind in Southern California. “Pain is a nearly ever-present part of everyday life for at least 20-35 percent of kids and adolescents worldwide. For many children their chronic pain becomes completely debilitating,” said Anke Reineke, Ph.D., director of the program. The Specialized Hospital Chronic Pain Management Program at Rady Children’s Hospital is working in partnership with New Jersey Children’s Specialized Hospital to offer the program that emphasizes pain management through a whole-person, multidisciplinary approach.

Prices for poinsettias range from $16 for a 15 to 17-inch plant up to $54 for a three to four-foot tall plant. Orders are being taken until Nov. 15, and plants arrive on Dec. 2 and 3. Orders can be placed at bit.do/PoinsettiasWithAPurpose or on their Facebook page at Rady Children’s Hospital Auxiliary-Rancho Bernardo Unit.
