A Talk With Dr. Nelson Y. Howard
What Patients Need to be Aware of When Choosing a Dentist
In today’s ever demanding world of knowledge and increased consumer awareness, especially in the healthcare field, more people are looking for advanced levels of expertise in the individuals they choose to take care of themselves and their family and friends. There is no better compliment than to have another person in our practice refer someone to our office because of the trust they have in us as well as the precise nature of what we do and the outstanding results we achieve for everyone. That has been the way my two very distinctive dental offices have flourished over the last 33 years.
So many dentists nowadays advertise they do everything in their own offices and falsely offer discounted rates or procedure “specials” with conditions to attract new patients to their offices. Furthermore, they advertise themselves to be the “Best” at something or were voted the “Best” by some non-validated organization. Consumers need to be aware that not all dentists practice the same type of dentistry, and cut-rate dentistry is just that, with the results reflecting that as well. In my offices, a significant amount of dentistry we perform is having to redo other dentists’ poor workmanship. This is very upsetting when the patient was misled by the dentist and their lack of skills to treat them properly.

A dentist’s credentials and experience should also be checked by any prospective patient, especially in the area of cosmetic dentistry. There’s a saying I have come up with that “every dentist claims to be a cosmetic dentist but not every dentist knows cosmetic dentistry.” Just because a dentist says they do cosmetic dentistry doesn’t make it cosmetic dentistry. I am one of approximately 400 dentists worldwide who has earned the distinction of being an Accredited Member of the prestigious American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. Many people are demanding this advanced level of dentistry now more than ever, especially after having been mistreated by someone who claims to have qualifications and skills that cannot be validated.
Many dentists simply do not address functional dental issues nor have proper training and knowledge in this area. I have seen that inferior results often break down sooner in someone’s mouth because of a lack of understanding by the dentist in how a person’s mouth functions, especially during chewing. My offices focus on the art and science of comprehensive dentistry. My extensive credentials, experience, knowledge, and training in all these disciplines are for the benefit of my patients. There is a so-called “Teeth in a Day” trend where patients are constantly being misled into believing they walk into a dental office and get “new” teeth the same day when they simply do not. Many of these places remove perfectly healthy teeth as part of the process.

I do not perform every dental procedure as so many dentists claim to do nowadays, mostly because they fear losing patient revenues all the while performing substandard care for their patients. I refer my patients to specialists when needed. Patients are appreciative of this, knowing they will be receiving the best care. I believe that any dentist needs to know the limits of what they are able to do for their patients before they start treatment.
In summary, it is important that today’s consumers do their proper research when selecting a dentist. Many of my patients come to me for a second opinion when something is not feeling right only to be told what they already know, that the dentistry they recently had done is not correct and needs to unfortunately be redone to correct the problems.
If you are having a dental concern, experiencing an ongoing problem from recently completed dental care, want a second opinion, or would like to become a patient in my office, please call either of my offices that is most convenient for you for a complimentary consultation.
