The award-winning Ellington Jazz Ensemble will perform a free concert at the Rancho Bernardo Library at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, under the direction of Dr. John Reynolds, Music Department Chair and Director of Jazz Studies at the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts (SCPA).  The Ellington Jazz Ensemble is an audition-based group and is the flagship ensemble of the SCPA Jazz department.  This ensemble travels extensively during the school year to participate in music festivals, where it has won numerous awards.

The SCPA is a college-preparatory, arts-focused public magnet school for students. Students from the SCPA Jazz program have been accepted to and received scholarships from prestigious Jazz institutions including the Juilliard School, Berklee School of Music, The New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, Manhattan School of Music, Cornish College of the Arts, University of Southern California and many others. Under the direction of Dr. John Reynolds, the SCPA Ellington Jazz Ensemble has appeared at the Reno Jazz Festival, the Essentially Ellington festival and was the opening band for the 2016-2017 Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

The Discovery series of concerts at the library serves to educate the public about various music forms and to expand the opportunity for local musicians to perform and provide insights to their music. There is no charge for this performance and all ages are welcome.
