Shoal Creek Elementary School students recently spent three days fundraising for Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego as part of the organization’s Red Shoe Crew program. The program fosters a sense of charity and engagement among children by having them educate their peers on the charity’s mission. The Shoal Creek students collected $1,000 in donations to benefit families of hospitalized children staying at the Ronald McDonald House.

“Children are many times only concerned about bettering themselves and are caught up in a ‘me’ world,” explained Christie Setnan, a fifth grade teacher and student council coordinator at the school. “This fundraiser puts them in a position to help another child and their families and also see how far their donation can help others. Teaching this is one thing, but having the students actually put their donations in the big red shoe makes it a reality.” Learn more at
