Cub Scout Leader Faith Halterman Has Turned Tragedy into Opportunity
In the Service of Others
Faith Halterman truly embodies what it means to be a leader and positive role model. As the committee chair for 92128’s Cub Scout Pack 624, which serves children from several Carmel Mountain Ranch area elementary schools, Faith plans events such as camping, field trips, and other activities, ensuring that the Pack is thriving and serving the needs of families in the community. She is also a mother to sons Nathan and Adam and cats Boomer, Ginger, and Mochi. While Faith currently dedicates countless hours to her role as a Scout leader, it was not always part of her initial “Tour Plan,” as she puts it, to be so involved with the organization.
In October 2015, Faith’s husband unexpectedly passed away after recovering from brain surgery. Despite the darkness she and her sons felt in those early hours, something beautiful happened – Pack families took turns delivering meals every night for a month, bringing toys for Nathan and Adam, flowers and treats for Faith, and continually stopping by to check on them. “I had never felt such a feeling of support and family before!” Faith shared. “Though I did not know how at the time, I knew that I wanted to give back, be there for others, and help provide that same feeling of support for others.” So just a few months later, Faith joined Pack 624 and hasn’t looked back since. “I love watching both of my sons laugh and have pure fun on Scouting events,” she said. “We’re bonding as a family and creating new happy memories, and I have the opportunity to be a role model in a capacity for my sons that I never thought was possible.” In fact, it was only recently that Faith realized how much she was actually gaining by giving her time to Scouting, an experience she feels is perfectly captured in Gandhi’s quote: “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”
