Student Star Amy Athing Thrives On Competition and Community
Focus on Success
Five years ago, a friend’s horseback-themed birthday party changed Amy Athing’s life. “I was hooked,” said Amy, now 12 years old. “I focus all of my free time on horseback riding, and my dream is to compete nationally.” She keeps up with equestrian accomplishments in the news and on social media, drawing inspiration from world-famous horseback riders like Beezie Madden, Kent Farrington, and Reed Kessler.
Amy backs up her passion and aspirations with hard work and dedication. She rides five days a week with Venture Farms, Inc. at Poway Equestrian Center, and she competes frequently in the hunter/jumper discipline – along with the other half of her dynamic partnership. “My pony Rascal and I make a great team,” she noted.
Outside the arena, Amy enjoys making friends and exploring her community. She’s lived in Carmel Mountain Ranch since she was two years old. “It is amazing here,” she said. “I have a wonderful friend named Jenna that lives right next to me. We’ve known each other since we were toddlers!”

She’s in seventh grade at Bernardo Heights Middle School, where she appreciates the chance to socialize – “I have a lovely squad that I eat lunch with and hang out with,” she shared – and the caring, understanding teachers. “My favorite subject is science because my teacher is so nice,” she said. “She allows me to learn a lot in a fun way.” Since science comes so easily to her, Amy plans on pursuing a career in the field of chemistry, though she hasn’t yet decided what specific jobs she’s aiming for. She’s already thinking about how to get where she wants to go, and top universities on her list include Cal Poly Pomona and Cal Poly San Louis Obispo.
On the home front, Amy enjoy cooking and spending time with her family – from her parents, Sonja and William, to their menagerie of pets. In addition to Rascal, Amy has a cat named Honey, rabbits named Emma and Peyton, and a betta fish named Starlord.
