Double Time

Their wedding was broadcast on a reality TV show. It’s not unusual for Steve and Kristine DeMatteo to shake things up. They met through friends at Mission Beach when Kristine was completing her Master’s degree in Education at SDSU, and Steve was a Marine helicopter pilot at MCAS Miramar, serving two combat tours in his career. Now with two boys, the fun continues. “One time, we surprised Nicholas and Dylan on Christmas Day by telling them they were going to their grandparents’ house, but we actually took them to the airport for a flight to San Francisco,” shared Kristine DeMatteo.

“We’re also grateful for the wildlife that lives in the neighborhood – owls, hawks, coyotes, even wild turkeys.”

Home is in The Trails, where Kristine revealed, “We’re also grateful for the wildlife that lives in the neighborhood – owls, hawks, coyotes, even wild turkeys.” Steve has an MBA in Finance from University of South Florida and a BA in International Relations from Tulane University. When he separated from the Marine Corps they moved back to San Diego, where he’s now a partner with Pacific Point Group at UBS Wealth Management and continues his military service as a Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve. Kristine is an elementary school teacher, now full-time mom and private tutor. She taught English in Korea for an exchange program and currently volunteers at Dylan’s school.

Both kids were born in Tampa. Nicholas is in sixth grade at Bernardo Heights Middle School and Dylan is in fourth grade at Chaparral Elementary School. After playing little league for several years, the brothers are involved with Poway Valley Water Polo. They’re musically inclined and collectively play guitar, drums, trumpet, piano, and baritone. Beach time means surfing or boogie boarding.

Their dogs and cat are shelter rescues. Kristine added, “We have three chickens that hatched in Dylan’s classroom that we consider part of the family.” Community is important to them. Kristine served as president of the Friends of the Library at RB High School and was on the board of the Rancho Bernardo Historical Society. In 2012 Steve was inducted into the Rancho Bernardo Hall of Fame for his community service to this area. He’s now on the boards for Poway Center for the Performing Arts Foundation and Casa de las Campanas.

“We enjoy playing tennis, dining out, going to the beach, listening to live music, and traveling,” revealed Kristine. The DeMatteos have it dialed in, and it’s not reality TV but a fulfilling life together.
