Sunday Fun Day!
Shirley Mallon Gives Seniors Fun and Laughter Every Sunday
Ah, Sunday – when we get to unwind, spend time with loved ones and simply enjoy ourselves, right? While that may be the case for many of us, it also tends to be the saddest day of the week for senior citizens, as there are usually very limited planned social activities for them on that particular day. Hence, Shirley Mallon, a ninety-six-year-old Bernardo Heights resident, created her own group five years ago called, “Never Alone On Sunday.”
“I started this group after my husband passed away because I found there were far fewer events for seniors on that day, and many of my senior friends agreed,” Shirley explained. That initial social gathering now includes dozens of people who meet every Sunday to play Bridge, Contract Gin (an easy version of Gin Rummy), Canasta, Mah Jongg and even Mexican Dominoes.
The group used to meet at various random Rancho Bernardo locations, but in February 2013 the Remington Club invited the participants to have their weekly gatherings in their multi-purpose room every Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. Shirley remarked, “The Remington Club is a lovely place and they have been so good to us. Also, members of my group receive a discount worth thousands of dollars if they eventually become residents of The Remington Club.”
No stranger to overseeing social functions, Shirley used to help her husband plan activities through another group they started back in 1994 called, “The Jewish Cultural and Service Club.” That group amassed up to 200 members, and Shirley’s husband came up with their meeting topic ideas. Shirley recalled, “One of my favorite topics was back when President Clinton, Boris Yeltsin and Benjamin Netanyahu were all in office. It was called ‘Bibi, Boris and Bill,’ and a local college professor spoke. It was great!”
When she’s not playing card games, Shirley loves to read, knit and roam through the Bernardo Winery – “even though I don’t drink; it’s just so beautiful there,” Shirley remarked. She also regularly shops at Barons Market, Sprouts and Trader Joe’s. When her son visits her from New York City at least four times a year, he takes Shirley to the Barona Casino’s buffet, and he also created her group’s website, www.neveraloneonsunday.com.
Thanks to Shirley’s efforts, seniors need not be lonely on Sundays anymore. Shirley added, “Come have an afternoon of fun and laughter while playing cards. Bring your friends, or make new ones!”
